The Queensland Indian is a new bi-monthly publication offering the Indian community and their friends in Queensland (and soon in other states in Australia), a new approach to journalism when it comes to matters affecting individuals or the community as a whole.
“A prerequisite of democracy is the democratization of communication, which in turn requires the empowerment of individual” (Philip Lee, 1995). This is probably an apt quote to describe the direction The Queensland Indian proposes to take. Our objective is simple and clear “ To contribute to building a better and stronger Indian community through a process of information gathering , sharing and through partnership with the community.”
We believe that over a period of time the community has not been fully informed about many issues resulting in
(i) the community not being able to analyse and provide meaningful input into policy considerations by the three levels of government
(ii) the community not preparing itself for times ahead.
(iii) some individuals within the community taking advantage of the silence displayed by the majority.
The first edition was produced in September (we admit rather hurriedly) to coincide with the staging of the biggest Indian event the Indian Bazaar. A regular feature of our publication will be the page titled 'FACE TO FACE.' The FACE TO FACE page will carry interviews with people from 'all walks of life,' including interviews with Politicians, public officials and people of interest. In view of the coming Federal elections, The Queensland Indian decided to start the FACE TO FACE section with special focus on the seats of Bonner and Moreton. We want to put the politicians on the ‘spot' to gauge, among other things, the level of their 'interaction' with the Indian community.
We will be introducing many other features and we will release details as we progress. We aim to bring quality articles as this will in itself result in a bigger readership.
